Jason Fix Please NOTES OF HOPE March 27, 2019 Umbrellas As winter morphs into spring, Indiana has seen more than its share of precipitation. And of course, it seems to always be happening on Sundays. Never have I used an umbrella so much! Recently I snapped this photo at church during a women’s bible study. I was struck by the diversity of the umbrellas. Such a range of patterns and colors, all lined up together while drying out. No two are alike. Yet, they all serve the same common purpose. These umbrellas are a sign of diversity coupled with unity! Another group of ladies who meet at church are the Sew Good Quilters. They create an array of the most gorgeous quilts with such a range of patterns and colors, all lined up together over the quilt racks. No two are alike. Yet, they all serve the same common purpose. These quilts are also a sign of diversity coupled with unity! Recently, It started pouring rain while I was attending a writers’ workshop. In a hurry, I grabbed my coat from the rack and put it over my head to protect me from the torrents of rain falling from the sky, my umbrella being safely tucked away in my car. Once inside the car, I noticed it was not my coat. I groaned, knowing I had to return it, and so I did. Surveying the coat rack, I was surprised at how many coats looked the same. Mine had been right next to the one I mistakenly took. I sheepishly hung up the drenched coat, wondering what the owner would think. Next time I will bring a bright purple coat, providing some diversity among all the blacks, grays and charcoals. Yet, they all serve the same common purpose, albeit with little sign of diversity. The diversity of life is a refreshing, rejuvenating and remarkable aspect of God’s design. Seeing those umbrellas and quilts made me smile at the beauty and brilliance they brought to life. Seeing those coats brought only consternation and concern. God created us to be unique individuals. This one really caught my eye as I noticed the different layers of color and mediums. On my way to work I also often see a very large man near the Meridian Street on-ramp to I-65. While his size catches my eye, it is his layers of clothes and layers of blankets that is most striking. He stands, or sits, in a spot where others do not congregate. Usually I see homeless people together. This man is all on his own in his layers of warmth. He doesn’t hold a sign and never asks for anything, even though it looks like he should be doing that. When I make the time and figure out where to park to get to him, I’d like to hear his story, why he is in that particular spot alone, and whether he needs more layers to stay warm. When I think of layers, I also think of my Godfather. His wife, whom he called “Baby Doll”, would often make that layered Jello salad with all the bright colors and white cream in between. I loved that dessert but have never made it. I need to do that, too. Finally, layers makes me think of Thomas Merton, a great writer and contemplative in the Catholic tradition. He reminds us that there is no single event in the life of most of us that leads us to Christ. Very rarely are there divine revelations and conversions like Saul on the Road to Damascus. Instead, it is layer upon layer of people and events that send us into our Savior’s waiting arms – the person who gives you a warm coat in winter, the breathtaking view of a God-creation: sunrise, and godfathers who serve layered Jello. Generally that message, in various forms, has to come to me three different times before I write about it. That helps me reflect on what I can learn from any such message. This time it was the word “listen” that kept coming to me. As a young adult, I was very quiet, painstakingly quiet. I listened but didn’t contribute much. People often commenting about it in ways not always kind. It was a difficult time, but I overcame it by learning the art of active listening. Once I posed a proper question, people would take off talking and talking, so I could just listen and listen. Last week a mom agonized with me about her daughter being so quiet and how uncomfortable it was for the young girl and those around her. Deja vu! Being quiet is often seen as a sign of weakness; but, our greatest weaknesses are also our greatest strengths. Instead of unkind words about me being so quiet, now I’m often told that I’m a very good listener. I relayed to the mom how I am sure her daughter is also a very good listener! Following former President George Bush’s death, I heard on NPR that when Bush had a few moments of down time, he’d pick up the phone and call a world leader to ask them how they were doing. There are transcripts of every call he made. Those transcripts reveal Bush mostly listening to the other leaders. When I picture a transcript, I picture a lot of words. Now, picture a transcript of listening. To me it is such a great compliment to have your life be one of listening and people knowing that they were listened to by you! One hymn we sing that often resonates in my head says: “Listen, Listen God is calling Through the Word inviting, Offering forgiveness, Comfort and joy!" In prayer, we often think of talking with God. But it is in listening that we hear God. Sitting in silence and listening for God can be so, so valuable It is also valuable to listen for God while talking with friends, as God speaks to us through others; and while walking in the world, as God speaks to us through the things we see; and even while listening to NPR, for God speaks to us through media of all types. Seeing the many, many buttons reminds me of my grandmother who had a large tin full of buttons. How did she, or anyone, acquire that many buttons? When I saw just how many buttons this one antique mall in Cambridge City, IN, had on its shelves, I became intrigued. Buttons came into being with buttonholes in the 13th century and have proliferated ever since. I decided to ask people how and why they save buttons. 1. Bob told me that even today he has a button bowl where he keeps the extra buttons that come on clothing or buttons that fall off and don’t get sewn back on. 2. Tom and Dave said that when shirts wear out, parts get used for polishing silver or dusting; the buttons have to be taken off so they don’t scratch the object being cleaned and eventually they wind up in the button tin. 3. Julie and Jerry talked about one grandchild taking 100 buttons from their button box to school for their 100th day of school. They had made button bags as quiet toys for their grandchildren, as buttons could be sorted by color, or by size, or by uniqueness. There are so, so many different buttons in the world, sorting the various colors would be fun. In my Wired Word Bible study, we read how widows in India and Nepal are told they can only wear white or black, so as not to disrespect their deceased husbands. No colorful, beautiful buttons for them. They are shunned and not treated well at all. It’s very sad how they have to live their lives. I’m very thankful for the “Red Tika Challenge” bringing an awareness of widows’ situation in these countries. Many thousands of years ago, on through today, God has told us to take care of widows and orphans. Do we? Do I? The Bible study encouraged us to see how widows and orphans fare in our communities and how we can come along side them. This is something I need to look into. Imagine if the button jars only contained white or black buttons. It is the assortment of colors that make these jars, boxes and tins so fun to look at and appealing to buy. All people are God’s people. All colors are God’s colors. All people should be able to enjoy all colors whether in clothing, skin, hair, eyes, or buttons. Evening services always appeal to me. There was something holy about being in the church at night. Tonight is no exception. I look forward to our worship service at 7pm when there will be a special drama about the Last Supper, when we will have communion, and when the altar will be stripped and Psalm 22 read. Takes my breath away a bit to think about it in anticipation of what will take place. Maundy means “command” in Latin. On this “Commandment Thursday” Christ served the first Holy Communion meal with his disciples. The first “Last Supper” if you will. They all sat around a table, and after the meal, Jesus took the bread and wine and commanded them to eat and drink of this for the remembrance of him and for the forgiveness of sins. This meal is like all meals should be. They should be about more than just the food. Food is important as a relationship builder, as a means to draw people closer together, and as a part of sharing in each other’s lives. Imagine a meal, and maybe you have participated in some as I have, where the people sit around the table, eat the food and do not talk. Imagine if Jesus and the disciples did that. It would have no real meaning all these thousands of years later. So, I encourage you, and me, to invite people over for a meal. It doesn’t have to be elaborate and could simply be carryout Chinese or pizza. Spend the time sitting around a table eating and talking, sharing and getting to know one another more deeply. Humility is an odd quality. Often the more one strives to exhibit genuine humility, the further one strays from it. Often when we least expect it, humility overtakes us, overwhelms us, and overpowers us. Today was another “first” in my life and genuine humility crashed upon the scene. Sunday afternoon I was invited over my dear friend Betty Ebel’s home. Betty is 96, and I have been taking her communion, visiting with her and hearing her life stories for some time now. Betty attended Messiah Lutheran Church, where I serve, when she could, for the past four years since she moved here from Ft. Wayne to be closer to her daughter Sue. It was wonderful to get to know this faithful woman of God. We both have a Detroit connection and a strong Lutheran background. Betty starting failing so I went to visit more often. Last week Betty was not in her recliner but lying in the bed she and her husband bought when they were married. Hospice was making her comfortable and said Betty only had hours or days left. Her daughter Sue was lying on the bed next to her and her son Rick was sitting on the chair at her bedside. A very loving picture. Betty took my hand and opened her eyes - too weak to talk but definitely letting me know she knew I was there. We prayed the Lord’s Prayer, and I spoke with her. This time she could not speak the words aloud with us, but I knew she was still saying them. She reached out and hugged me. Holy moments. Sunday, Palm Sunday, I was invited over to do the Lutheran Commendation of the Dying. Her two granddaughters were on the bed with her and all around the bed were her daughter Sue, son-in-law Joe and son Rick. I had never led this brief service before. Firsts can be intimidating and a cause for genuine humility. Yet firsts, as was this time, can be so powerful and meaningful. There is a responsive reading part in the Commendation of the Dying service where the family responds to the statements the leader says with the words: “Deliver your servant.” I asked the family to add, after the word servant, the name by which they call Betty. I heard the words “Grandma”, “Mom”, and “Betty.” I saw tears. I heard trembling voices. I felt overwhelmed with humility to be with this family at this time. Betty died the next morning and will be buried in Ft. Wayne this Good Friday. What a blessing it was to be a part of her life. Each year I can’t wait for the Wednesday night worship services. Each year I can’t wait to make and set out my Advent wreaths. Each year I can’t wait to read my daily devotion after lighting the candle(s). Yet, I do have to wait. This season of waiting is a great season especially when I focus on the religious side of these days before Christmas and try not to get caught up in all the frantic things happening around me. Waiting comes into focus when I am still around the wreath, candle and God’s Word each evening. It teaches me that I can wait and take to heart the words from Psalm 27: “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” This may be my favorite Advent wreath. First, I didn’t realize this camp we are staying at is part of the Church of the Brethren. Learned about them tonight. Second, we heard about our fellow volunteers this week. Some from New Zealand, Australia, California, Wisconsin, Michigan and many from the East Coast. Most had been on previous Road Scholar trips and raved about them. One man has been on 15 in the past 2 years! So tomorrow we begin to work on Heifer International’s Global Village. I have zero experience doing any of the tasks they need done which include, but are not limited to: 1. Winterizing the alpacas 2. Harvesting rice and cassavas 3. Building a fence in keeping with fences in Kenya 4. Making shelves for the home in Mozambique and staining them 5. Grinding maize We shall see what transpires tomorrow! Looking forward especially to Tuesday and going to see Antietam and DC’s Central’s Kitchen. Morning devotions are at 7am. Time for bed. We had a short, but fun visit. My grandchildren replenish my spirit with unconditional love and fun. Wondering now what I’m getting into. Junior is picking me up from the airport at 2pm and driving me an hour and a half to the Shepherd’s Spring Outdoor Ministry Center where this experience is based. My devotions this morning ( I’ve used “A Guide to Prayer” for years especially when traveling due to the size and content) included the hymn that begins: “Teach me, O Lord, your holy way and give me an obedient mind. That in your service I may find my soul’s delight from day to day.” I think this is a good vision for this trip—learning the holy way, being obedient and serving. It is interesting that serving always leads to delight afterwards no matter how much apprehension there is before. I often have to tell myself to just do it. This part of my journey is very familiar as it begins with the Megabus to Chicago which I have done more than a dozen times. This is old hat yet so new. It’s just the first leg to learning more about ending hunger. Friday night as I walked home from Palominos after a great evening with friends and a more-than-full belly, there was a man sleeping in a doorway. When had he last eaten? When had he last slept in a queen size bed with a down comforter? When had he last woken up to a hot cup of coffee and his favorite breakfast-mine being an English muffin with peanut butter? It’s about choices in life I know. He chooses to sleep there versus Wheeler Mission. He made choices I did not. If those choices had presented themselves to me would I have taken them? I’ve heard it said, when someone walks past a person sleeping on the street such as this: “But for the grace of God there go I.” That set of words makes me cringe. God’s grace has zero to do with the situation. God’s grace is covering the person going through hard times as much as me no matter what my circumstance. God’s grace doesn’t keep me from making choices that lead to homelessness. And, I find it hard to believe, based upon the people I’ve talked to in such situations, that they chose to live like that. Things happen. Life snowballs. God’s grace is there all the time lavishing us with love and forgiveness and hope. Thanks be to God for that!! The other evening as I walked in the snowstorm after leaving Silver in the City, Ann was dancing away. Last Saturday as the rain was pouring down, Ann was dancing away. People walk by her who are tired of the snow, and Ann continues to dance. People walk by her who are tired of the cold, and Ann continues to dance. People walk by her who are just plain tired, and Ann continues to dance. Every day when I see her I’m reminded that we have a choice. We can dance through life being grateful and joyful, or we can trudge through life being complaining and lack-luster. We have a choice in everything we say and do as well as our attitude. I am not saying that we should fake it, although faking it until I made it at times really helped. We need to be authentic people though. I do find it interesting that when I smile at people, it is pretty hard for them not to smile back. Smiling while leading worship really makes my day. First, I am always so happy to be there and with others in my church community. Second, it sometimes will take people off guard and hopefully it’s a little blessing on their day when they hear me say with a big smile: “The peace of the Lord be with you always.” I can’t help it. It’s a joyous thing to say! How can I not smile to share God’s peace with someone?! Ann Dancing brings that smile to my face whenever I see her. She reminds me to dance and choose to be happy and smile. I ran across these verses from Psalm 26. What a beautiful description of worshiping God. May they bring a smile to your face.
